How did ancient Chinese generals use their ability of prediction to win the war?

How did ancient Chinese generals use their ability of prediction to win the war?
How can these generals win without fighting?
If you are interested in these things, read the following stories:
General Li used what Sun Tzu said:"If we want to fight, even though the enemy had built a high camp and dug a deep trench and wants to hold on, he still has to fight with us. This is because we are attacking where he must go to rescue. If we do not want to fight. Even if we only draw a line on the ground to defend, the enemy is still unable to fight with us. This is because we have left the place where he attacked!"

Lee Kwang-bi

Introduction of Characters

Lee Kwang-bi, the son of the third Khan Hu La of the Yao Nian, Qidan (an ancient nationality in China), was a famous general in the reign of Tang Su-zon (Tang Dynasty) and the contemporary with Guo Zi-yi. Lee Kwang-bi exceled in horsemanship and marksmanship and like to read the “Han Su” written by Ban Gu. He was ennobled as Ji Guo-gon for his exploits, and at 57 years of his age, died of sickness at Xu Zhou.

Shi Si-ming, the clansman of Tujue, had rather common features and knew six foreign languages. After serving An Lu-san, he and An Lu-san jointly launched a rebellion amid Dec. 16, 755 to Feb. 17, 763; in history, it was named as “An Shi Rebellion”. The wars among Guo Zi-yi, Lee Kwang-bi, and Shi Si-ming mainly occurred in this period. Upon death of An Lu-san, his son An Chin-xu wanted to eliminate Shi, thereupon, Shi surrendered to Tang Dynasty. Six months later, Shi Si-ming mutinied again at the 2nd year of Chien Yuan (759 A.D.) In march, he defeated the troop led by Jiedushi (official rank) in the Tang Dynasty, and then killed An Chin-xu. In April, he made himself as “Emperor Da Yan”. March of the 2nd year (761), he was killed by his eldest son---Shi Chao-yi.

Prophetic Examples

Prediction that the hostile generals Kao Tin-hui and Lee Ri-yue would together surrender.

Shi Si-ming stationed troops at Ho Qin (toponym) to block Lee Kwang-bi’s food-transporting route. Lee deployed his troop at Ye Shui Du to guard against Shi. At nightfall, Lee turned to Ho Yang, remaining an army of 1000 soldiers led by General Yong Xi-hao to defend the barrack. He said to Yong Xi-hao and other generals, “hostile generals Kao Tin-huei and Lee Ri-yue are the talent able to defeat tens of thousands of the troop. As they arrived at this place, you should not combat against them. If one surrenders, the other will also surrender.”

All generals snickered, for no one knew why Lee Kwang-bi would say so.

At the same time, Shi spoke to Lee Ri-yue, “Lee Kwang-bi is good at guarding city, but now he should station troops in the field. You lead our irony cavalry to cross the river at tonight, and seize him for me; fail to do so, I think… you are no need to come back.”

Lee Ri-yue led 500 cavalries to crossing the river at night, and arrived at Lee Kwang-bi’s barrack, then he asked Yon Xi-hao who defended the barrack, “Is Marsal Lee in?”

Yon replied, “He has left last night~”

Lee Ri-yue thought, “I have lost Lee Kwang-bi; seizing Yon Xi-hao only, I shall be executed~”. Thus, he requested to surrender~

Yon ushered Lee Ri-yue to meet Lee Kwang-bi, and Lee Kwang-bi treated him with high respect and regarded him as henchman. Kao Tin-Hui learnt of these things and came to surrender too.

People later asked Lee Kwang-bi, “Why did these two generals surrender so easily?”

Lee answered, “Shi Si-ming tries every possible to hold a field operation with me. Thereupon, no sooner has he heard I stay in the field, he though he can beat me. If Ri- yue fails to catch, he shall dare not to go back. As to Tin-hue, his talent surpass Ri-yue, so he will consider to replace him as soon as he learnt of Ri-yue being trusted and appointed.”

comment

Lee Kwang-bi’s example can be addressed as a classic case. Although it is short of Cao’s graceful approach as talking cheerfully and humorously, the fact is nearly equal in precision control of the human nature. Lee Kwang-bi accurately considers that Shi will dispatch Lee Ri-yue to catch him, that Shi will issue the related orders, and that Lee shall dare not to return, therefore, there is only one way left --- “Surrenders”. Such a simple strategy can avoid a bloody war, and yield two hostile generals to surrender; Lee Kwang-be is an expert indeed.

As to the fact that Lee Ri-yue betrays Shi Si-ming is same as Qing Bu betrays Liu Ban, both can be attributed to the issue of administers’ management and poor reign.
